Answers to some Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How many students usually go on a tour?
A.
It can vary between twelve and thirty.

Q. How many counselors accompany you on the trips?
A. There is always at least one other counselor besides myself. With the larger groups there have been as many as six other counselors.

Q. How long have you been leading tours?
A. Since 1984.

Q. Do you always go on each tour?
A. Yes.

Q. How many tours have you led since 1984?
A. Close to 100 tours.

Q. How do we evaluate the campuses?
A. There are evaluation sheets in the notebooks that are given to each student at the workshops. The counselors and students discuss the schools after getting back on the bus.

Q. What happens at the workshops and can parents attend the workshops?
A.
The workshops are designed to help prepare the students for the trips and will help them get more out of the tour. During the workshops we go over the final itinerary discussing not only the academic parts of the tour, but the social aspects as well. The students will receive their College Selection Workbooks at the workshop that they will use to evaluate the schools right after visiting them. Parents are strongly urged to attend the workshops.

Q. Can parents also go on the tours?
A. No, the tours are only for the students.

Q. Are the tours just for high school juniors?
A. I have also had a few sophomores go on the tours. This works well especially if the sophomores are mature.

Q. How long do we spend on each campus?
A. It can vary anywhere from one to three hours.

Q. Do we ever stay in residence halls?
A. Yes. During an eight day tour I try to arrange for my students to stay a night in a residence hall.

Q. Can we visit classes?
A. When we are on a campus for three hours there will be an opportunity to visit a class.

Q. What do we wear?
A. Usually you would wear the same clothes you wear to high school.

Q. How many colleges would we see in eight days?
A. We usually see approximately twenty-five colleges.

Q. Which college guides would you recommend?
A. There is a bibliography in the College Selection Workbook which you will receive one week to one month before the tour. At the workshop I specifically mention some of my favorites such as The Fiske Guide to Colleges by Edward B. Fiske.
