Sunday, April 4
There was a group of thirty boys and girls representing twelve different high schools (both public and private) from Northern and Southern California. There were six counselors also from Northern & Southern
California from both public & private high schools.
We flew out of San Francisco to Boston arriving around 8:00 p.m.
Our private motorcoach picked us up at the airport and drove us to Harvard where the students spent their first night together in a residence hall in Harvard Yard. The counselors stayed in a hotel within walking
distance of Harvard.
Monday, April 5
We had an informal tour of the Harvard campus
around 8:30 a.m. After the tour some of the students attended different classes while some others went to an information session held by the Harvard admission office.
By 10 a.m. we were on our way to Tufts University, about a twenty minute ride from Harvard. We had a tour at Tufts by two students who are actively involved in an acapella group on campus.
At 11:30 we were on our way to Boston University and had lunch in their student union where there is a food court offering many different choices. At 1:00 we had a tour of the
BU campus which was given by some BU students. We were able to see the places on campus in which we had the most interest. (Nearly all of our tours were given by students who had been on tours in previous years.)
A few of the students chose to spend the rest of the afternoon at MIT.
After we left BU, we headed for Boston College, about
a 15 minute drive. First we had a forty-five minute tour of the campus including their football stadium. We then met with the Director of Admissions, John Mahoney. Mr. Mahoney gave us a few facts about BC, and then
answered all of our questions.
By 3:30 p.m. we were on our way to Wellesley, about a thirty minute ride west of BC. We only stayed at Wellesley about forty-five minutes after having a bus tour
of the campus with a Wellesley student pointing out the highlights of their beautiful campus. We also had an opportunity to visit her residence hall which overlooked a lake.
By 5:30 we were back in downtown Boston at Quincy Market having dinner. We stayed there about an hour and were on our way to Norton, MA
to have an evening visit at Wheaton College. Several Wheaton students were waiting for us when we arrived. We walked around the campus stopping at their new athletic facility and
student center. Then we visited one of their new residence halls where we sat around and asked questions about what it's like to be a student at Wheaton.
We checked into the Westin Providence in Providence, RI around 9:00 p.m. After sleeping on the floor the previous night at Harvard, we were ready for a real bed. There were two
students to a room. Stacy warned us to be ready to load the bus at 8:15 am to head for Brown University.
Other colleges visited that week were:
Connecticut College, Yale University, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Williams, Union, Vassar, Columbia & Barnard, New York University, Princeton, Penn,
Swarthmore, Villanova, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Georgetown, GeorgeWashington University, & Johns Hopkins.
Each time we boarded the bus after a college visit,
Stacy or one of the counselors would remind us to fill out our evaluation forms in our notebooks. The counselors were more than willing to talk with us any time on the trip about the college admission process.
We also had movies on the bus and we had fresh popcorn popping in the microwave. We stopped at a grocery store early in the trip & filled the refrigerator on the bus.
We enjoyed having dinner in Greenwich Village the day we visited NYU. In Washington D.C. we had time to see many of the monuments as well as shop in Georgetown.
